  1. 1785-1859. English author, whose works 
  2. include Confessions of an English Opium-Eater 
  3. 1821 and the essays `On the Knocking at the 
  4. Gate in Macbeth' 1823 and `On Murder 
  5. Considered as One of the Fine Arts' 1827. He 
  6. was a friend of the poets Wordsworth and 
  7. Coleridge. Born in Manchester, de Quincey ran 
  8. away from school there to wander and study in 
  9. Wales. He then went to London, where he lived 
  10. in extreme poverty but with the constant
  11. companionship of the young orphan Ann, of
  12. whom he writes in the Confessions. In 1803 he
  13. was reconciled to his guardians and was sent
  14. to university at Oxford, where his opium
  15. habit began. In 1809 he settled with the
  16. Wordsworths and Coleridge in the Lake
  17. District. He moved to Edinburgh 1828, where
  18. he eventually died. De Quincey's work had a
  19. powerful influence on Baudelaire and Poe
  20. among others.
